Are we finally cracking our way out of winter’s ice?
Or am I speaking too soon? 🧊🌸 What a first week it has been for Cool Jobs NZ! There has certainly been nothing cold about it, with more than enough action to keep the adrenaline pumping.
So, what have I learned this week?
First, the mood of an entire region can apparently rise and fall on the result of a rugby match. But beyond that, spring really does seem to be waking things up. Job boards are looking livelier, businesses are talking about growth, and my feed is full of people announcing new roles, promotions and career moves.
Here in Canterbury, that feeling is backed by some encouraging numbers. The region’s unemployment rate fell to 3.6% in the June 2026 quarter, compared with 5.6% nationally. Canterbury also contributed around 30% of New Zealand’s employment growth over the year, while local job advertisements reportedly increased by 18%.
That does not mean the market is easy. It means the opportunities and competition are moving differently in different parts of the country.
For employers, this may be the right time to secure that superstar before someone else does.
For job seekers, one lesson stood out clearly this week: homework matters.
If immigration is part of your plan, know where you want to go. Understand the visa pathways, research the country and be realistic about what employers will require.
If you are targeting a particular company or industry, find out what they need and be ready to explain how your experience fits.
Most importantly, answer the question every employer is quietly, or some not so quietly, asking: What makes you stand out?
There are plenty of ‘here I am’ CVs circulating. Far fewer say:
“Here is the value I bring, and here is why I could be your next superstar.”
